DESCRIPTION:RC Workshop: 1/10 Scale R/C Comp CLASS (2.0 & 2.5) at The Battlerground Pittsburgh\n \nJoin us on Sunday\, May 31\, 2025\, starting at 10 AM at The BG for our FREE Class 2.0 and 2.25 1/10th Scale R/C Rock Crawling Competition!\nDuring the comp\, we will have six courses total—three for Class 2.0 and three separate courses for Class 2.25.\nDrivers can choose to enter Class 2 or Class 2.25. If you’ve won at The BG more than twice\, made the podium more than four times\, or are a sponsored driver\, you’ll automatically move up to Class 2.5. That means you can only compete in Class 2.5 comps\, not Class 2 or 2.25.\nClass 2 and 2.25 comps are for those newer to crawling\, are comfortable competing at this skill level\, and/or running more moderately built rigs.\nAll comps at The BG are now free! Rental trucks are available for anyone who needs one.\nAll ages welcome! For ages 12 & under\, reverses are free and don’t count against scoring.\n1/24th scale course will be open and available during all comps during the evening.\nCompetition Rules – 1/10 Scale\nGeneral Rules (Apply to All Classes):\n– 10 progress gates\, plus start and finish gates (all gates are 12” wide). Start and finish gates count as 10 points if struck.– 8-minute time period allowed per course for all 3 courses.– Tires must be under 4.85” and 2.2” max on wheel size (tires CAN be siped\, grooved\, or trimmed).– Cab-only trucks are allowed.– Dovetails are allowed (must be ½” from widest part of cab).– Rail chassis only (no tube frames).– Must have a front bumper. Can be mounted on a truck or molded into the body\, but must be wider than the frame rails.– Rear bumpers are NOT required.\nClass 2.0:\n– Body requirement: Cabs must be at least 4.25” from the top of the cab to the bottom of the door.– No team drivers allowed.\nClass 2.25:\n– Body requirement: MUST have at least cab only for a body.– No team drivers allowed.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Old Car Dealership\n\n\n\n\nThe first priority was to get the building safe\, secure and weather-tight. With step one accomplished\, the team went to work on getting The BG field and facility up and running. Thanks to the long hours and dedication of his team\, they hauled off over 80\,000 pounds of debris and junk that had been stored in the building for decades. Between a master carpenter\, electrician\, block mason\, and a team of extremely dedicated employees\, they were able to pull off what most thought was an impossible task. \nThe owner believes in restoring buildings that have solid structure instead of tearing them down and losing their rich history. The Old Car Dealership was a perfect candidate after years of neglect. He hoped to bring life back to what once was a landmark building on the 8th Ave corridor. Since our opening in 2014\, new plans are still underway including the addition of an Intellectual Hobby Shop on the second floor mezzanine and two cafes on the first floor. The transformation will be complete with window repairs\, a new parking lot\, and new fencing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is The BG?\n\n\n\n\nThe BG facility is truly one of a kind.  It incorporates more than just Airsoft. We have expanded our facility to accommodate Airsoft\, NERF\, Gel Blasters\, Nerf Rivals\, GOTCHA Paintball Guns\, Bow Tag\, and slingshots. The owner wanted to incorporate several different activities into one facility. The BG offers private parties such as birthday parties\, corporate holiday parties\, team building events and more for any of the above activities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy?\n\n\n\n\nThe owner was looking for a place to bring his own two children after school or on the weekends where they could have fun and be active together in a safe environment.  While there are other facilities that provide some of these activities\, none of them are a one-stop-shop for fun.  The owner envisioned a place that he could go with his children regularly that would provide exercise\, fun\, and excitement\, all while teaching them teamwork\, honor\, and strategy.  That’s when the concept of “The BG” was born.

DESCRIPTION:Jazz Lunch with the Thomas Wendt Quartet at Golden Age Beer Co. | Weekly\n\n12:00 PM  3:00 PM\n\n\nGolden Age Beer Company337 East 8th AvenueHomestead\, PA\, 15120United States (map)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPittsburgh’s next-generation jazz drummer puts together a quartet of the city’s best jazz professionals every Sunday from 12-3 at Golden Age to start your Sunday Funday off with some spectacular vibes. \n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe love lager.\n\n\n\n\nWe started Golden Age Beer Co. because we are passionate about making clean and crisp lagers that are eminently drinkable. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom crisp Northern German and fragrant Italian-style pilsners to luxurious dunkels and Franconian rauchbiers to the easy-drinking\, “lawnmower” American lager\, we believe that\, with their clean\, subtle and eminently-drinkable finesse\, lagers are the beers that bring people together\, that cross divides\, and that are both the past and the future of beer.  And so we brought a brewery that makes lager its primary focus to Pittsburgh and\, more particularly\, to Homestead.  Indeed\, we believe that to do anything else would be an injustice to this community’s hard-working\, steely heritage and resolve.  When this community rose up in 1892 to rebuff a barge full of armed Pinkertons\, it was fueled by Homestead-brewed lager\, while the very brewers who crafted that lager stood in solidarity with their steel-worker brethren on the banks of the Monongahela.  We hope that we can stand in solidarity with this community once more as it continues on its path to a new golden age. \nOur brewhouse is well-equipped to produce the finest lagers.  We are fortunate to brew on a state-of-the-art 15 barrel BrauKon brewing system.  Bavarian-made and designed to manufacture the world’s most precise beer styles\, this system provides our brewing team with the tools it needs to walk the tightrope to make perfect lager\, which is defined nearly as much by its absence of imperfections as it is by its pursuit of perfection.  In what feels like a meeting driven by fate itself\, we were fortunate to find a head brewer who is up to the challenge of working with a system that has a lofty reputation for precision and finesse. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet Head Brewer Aaron Dahl\nHead Brewer Aaron Dahl joined Golden Age in 2021 to oversee the transition of the brew house and begin working on recipe development.  Aaron comes from Chicago’s Alarmist Brewing\, where he was the head brewer for six years prior to moving to Pittsburgh to head the Golden Age Beer team. In the past several years\, Aaron has earned three medals in the Great American Beer Festival:  in 2018\, the Gold Medal in the Hazy IPA category for “Le Jus;” in 2020\, the Bronze Medal for the Pale Ale category for “Pantsless Pale Ale;” and\, in 2021\, the Bronze Medal in the American Lager category for “Midwest Royalty.” He has dedicated his professional life to beer.  And while he can produce some of the best IPAs and Pale Ales in the country\, over the past several years\, his passion — like ours — has turned towards lagers\, and he is excited to run a brew house that is dedicated to and designed for the same passion. \nGolden Age Beer Co. is located in historic Homestead\, Pennsylvania\, just outside of Pittsburgh. DESCRIPTION:3rd Place: The Cozy Collective at the Glitterbox Theater \n \nThe Cozy Collective is a soft\, low-pressure social space where you can unwind\, connect\, and be yourself. \nThink: pillows\, blankets\, gentle lighting\, coloring books\, fidget toys\, and good humans. Some folks come to cuddle. Some come to sit quietly or journal. Some come to meet new people in a calm\, intentional way. However you show up\, you’re welcome here. \nNO TOUCH REQUIRED OR EXPECTED. \nWe open with a short circle to share community agreements and offer a few tools for navigating consent\, communication\, and comfort in shared space. From there\, the space is yours to explore—whether that means making a new friend\, holding hands\, dancing with headphones on\, or curling up solo in the “Solo Salon.” Touch is never required or expected. \nAll genders\, orientations\, relationship styles\, neurotypes\, and bodies are welcome. No prior experience needed. Come solo\, with a partner\, or with friends. This space is queer-affirming\, trauma-informed\, and sensory-friendly. \nWhat can I expect at this event? \nThe Cozy Collective creates an atmosphere similar to a cuddle social\, which is a space curated to create a safe atmosphere to connect with others. It starts with an opening circle and workshop in consent where you learn to feel into your own body and practice saying “Yes” and “No” without any expectations. We teach how to respond in a safe way to verbal and nonverbal communication and how to empower ourselves to be better at communicating with others\, including learning neutral body language. \nThen we move into an open practice\, where you can choose how you want to connect with others or with yourself! There will be many options for relaxation activities in a soft\, cushiony space. Feel free to relax in stillness\, move around the space\, or witness! Read into your body and do what feels right to you. \nSome ways you can connect in this space: \nEye gazing \nMirroring through hand movements \nTalking or listening to others and holding space \nJournaling\, drawing\, or listening to music \nCuddling with a stuffed animal \nSitting solo where no one will disturb you \nJoin the connection corner for help making connections \nHugging or leaning on someone’s shoulder \nPlaying with someone’s hair \nHand or shoulder massage \nLaying back to back \nJoining a train\, spoon line\, or bear den \nCome up with your own ideas! \nSchedule \n1:00 PM – Registration begins Note: Doors close at 1:30 PM. No touching anyone without a verbal yes for each touch request\, even if you already had an interaction with that person. \nWhat do I do if I feel turned on? \nThese socials are platonic safe spaces. We do not promote shame around having feelings in your body\, but we do strive to towards platonic connection at all times in the cuddle space. If you are feeling overwhelmed\, you can move to a different area or snack area\, or exit the social altogether. You can also speak with one of our consent angels for more guidance. \nWhat if I feel sick after buying a ticket? \nWe would like to protect our lovely community so please stay home if you are feeling under the weather. Your ticket can be reimbursed or saved for a future event. Thank you for keeping us safe! \nWhat are consent angels? \nConsent Angels are volunteers that have been through consent training and help co-create a safe environment. These folks will be easy to spot throughout the event and you can come to them at any time for assistance (even if they look busy!). As a WAP participant you pay a monthly due\, but get priority calendar access\, free space usage\, and keep all the proceeds for the art you make. The second of three libraries built here in the Mon Valley\, the Carnegie Library of Homestead was built for use by the common man but adorned with grandeur and opulence fit for a royal family. The Carnegie Library of Homestead is the oldest Carnegie library in continuous operation in its original structure in the US\, and was chosen by CNN in 2014 as one of the 27 most fascinating libraries in the world to visit. In the past several years\, Aaron has earned three medals in the Great American Beer Festival:  in 2018\, the Gold Medal in the Hazy IPA category for “Le Jus;” in 2020\, the Bronze Medal for the Pale Ale category for “Pantsless Pale Ale;” and\, in 2021\, the Bronze Medal in the American Lager category for “Midwest Royalty.” He has dedicated his professional life to beer.  And while he can produce some of the best IPAs and Pale Ales in the country\, over the past several years\, his passion — like ours — has turned towards lagers\, and he is excited to run a brew house that is dedicated to and designed for the same passion. \nGolden Age Beer Co. is located in historic Homestead\, Pennsylvania\, just outside of Pittsburgh. Paul has an extensive repertoire of tunes encompassing the Great American Songbook- written by some of the best-known composers of American popular song. He is also well versed in early New Orleans jazz\, the Swing Era\, big band riffs\, and everything in between. Paul is known globally for his enthusiastic\, energetic\, and powerful performances. \nPaul Cosentino founded the Boilermaker Jazz Band in 1988. Paul has also been featured as a soloist with many of the top bands in the swing world today\, including a special appearance with the Jonathan Stout All-Star Big Band during an Artie Shaw tribute set. Paul has also been featured with Glen Crytzer’s Rhythm Makers\, Michael Gambles Rhythm Serenaders\, the Gordon Webster Band\, Naomi and Her Handsome Devils\, the Russ Wilson Swingtet\, Clint Baker’s Golden Gate Swing Band\, and many more. In the past several years\, Aaron has earned three medals in the Great American Beer Festival:  in 2018\, the Gold Medal in the Hazy IPA category for “Le Jus;” in 2020\, the Bronze Medal for the Pale Ale category for “Pantsless Pale Ale;” and\, in 2021\, the Bronze Medal in the American Lager category for “Midwest Royalty.” He has dedicated his professional life to beer.  And while he can produce some of the best IPAs and Pale Ales in the country\, over the past several years\, his passion — like ours — has turned towards lagers\, and he is excited to run a brew house that is dedicated to and designed for the same passion. \nGolden Age Beer Co. is located in historic Homestead\, Pennsylvania\, just outside of Pittsburgh. Homestead’s legacy provides us with important lessons about the fortunes of industrial development and organized labor in America. \nAmity Homestead was the name given by John McClure to a quaint county seat which he built in the bend of the Monongahela a mile or so below Braddock’s Crossing and ten miles from Pittsburgh in Mifflin Township. John passed the picturesque place on to his son John and through him to his grandson Abdiel. \nAt one time\, the area of Homestead was generally bounded by Ann Street to the west and McClure Street to the east\, the riverfront to the north and East 12th Avenue to the south.  This made up the estate of the McClure family. The huge McClure home stood approximately between East 9th Avenue and East 10th Avenue\, with a large lawn fronting Eighth Avenue. The easterly property boundary at McClure Street was the dividing line between Homestead Borough and what was then Mifflin Township\, and now Munhall Borough. \nIn the 1850s\, the McClure family\, hoping to raise personal funds\, organized a land title company with other early landowners and began to subdivide their sizeable property holdings. Today\, this recorded plan of lots bears the McClure family name. Around 1890\, a typical lot of 50 feet by 100 feet in this neighborhood would have cost approximately $2\,500 and one of these homes was estimated to have cost between $5\,000 and $20\,000 to build. The City of Pittsburgh was looking for property to erect its new Poor Farm in 1850 and bought 150 acres from Abdiel McClure. \nIn 1872\, Abdiel sold 113 acres to a banking and insurance company and a town was forthwith laid out and called Homestead. The first sale of lots was made to all the old-time accompaniments of a brass band and free junketing and the Pittsburgh\, Virginia and Charleston Railroad building across the empty lots the following year. The town took a good start and bade fair\, soon to grow as big as the older places in the region. But the panic of 1873 came and gave it a setback from which it took long to recover. In 1879 there were less than six hundred inhabitants. Munhall was incorporated as a borough in 1901. \nIn 1879\, Kloman decided to build a mill of their own. They bought a small tract of land adjoining the City Poor Farm at Homestead and commenced the erection of a building 684 feet long by 85 feet wide to contain a 21 inch mill\, two Universal mills\, a 16 inch bar train and a muck train. At the same time the Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Company bought 40 to 50 acres of land adjoining the Kloman’s and commenced the erection of converting works and blooming mills. These two concerns were designed to work together\, Kloman taking the surplus product and the Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Company working it into structural shapes. \nThe first steel for this plant was made on March 19\, 1881\, and the first rail on August 9\, 1881. Before the mill was quite completed\, however\, Kloman died. The Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Company at once purchased Kloman’s unfinished mill. By September 1881\, they were turning out 200 tons of rails daily. The Carnegies looked on with surprise and alarm. Up to this time\, they had been the only makers of rail in the Pittsburgh district. Here was competition at their very door! \nIn June 1882\, the Amalgamated Association Workers went on strike against the Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Company. At this time\, the price of steel was rapidly falling and\, alarmed by the imminent call for more capital\, some of the Homestead stockholders hastened to get out of the company. They went to the Carnegies and offered them control of the mill in October of 1883. The Homestead Mills became property of the Carnegie Group\, at this time\, the best-equipped plants of its size in the country. \nThe old Pittsburgh City Poor Farm had out-grown itself and the City of Pittsburgh sold approximately 148 acres to the Carnegie Land Company in 1891. A new facility was built for the City of Pittsburgh known as Marshalea was occupied in 1894. \nThe Carnegie Land Company\, a subsidiary of Carnegie Steel\, purchased properties in the area from the McClure\, Hayes and Munhall families to expand the Homestead Works and to sell lots for the construction of homes to its workers. \nThe Munhall Brothers laid out a plan of lots\, sold lots to mill employees\, and constructed houses for rental or purchase by employees in “Munhall Hollow” (present day Ravine Street). \nIn 1901\, the scene was set for the incorporation of Munhall Borough\, which was named for John Munhall. It embraces a section known popularly as “East Homestead”\, Munhall Station and the steel properties which were by that time in the control of United States Steel Corporation. \nThe City Farm Plan of lots stretched from the riverfront in a pie-shape\, up the hill from McClure Street to the West and to Martha Street to the East. It ended at a point at what is now the vicinity of 17th Avenue. A section of this large tract of land\, the area in the vicinity of the Carnegie Library\, was developed as the elite area of Homestead and Munhall from the 1890s to about 1920. \nWhile in New York City\, Andrew Carnegie met the designer of Central Park\, Fredrick Law Olmstead. He hired Olmstead to come to visit Homestead and lay out a plan of homes around his proposed new library. Carnegie believed in the future and made plans for many of his projects in this manner. Olmstead laid out broad streets with space for parking and still provided for two lane vehicular traffic. Olmstead believed in providing “green space” that was often forgotten about in fast growing city areas of that time. Utilities for the planned homes were through the rear of the properties. In this manner\, all homes were visually correct and pleasing to the eye. \nThe large grouping of huge company-built homes included the residence for the Superintendent of the Homestead Steel Works and for each manager of the major steel works departments. Open Hearths\, Rolling Mills\, Bessemer Department\, Blast Furnaces\, Production Planning\, etc. The home was made part of the Manager’s employment package. The mill supplied the electricity and natural gas services to these homes as well as the Library\, until the late 1940s. Visitors will note the area’s homes’ substantial construction\, the large lot sizes\, the tree-lined streets\, and the small Park Square Commons Area. There is a marked difference in this neighborhood compared to the nearby Homestead\, just a block away; where older\, frame homes and small closer set lots predominate. \nLiving in this neighborhood\, the home buyers in Park Square and the City Farm Plan were required by the Carnegie Land Company restrictions to construct only homes\, which cost at least $3\,000. The lots in the Library Estates sold from $3\,500 to $5\,000 each in 1900. Types of homes that were to be built were Venetian\, Brownstone\, Mansen or Queen Anne. They also agreed to company-stipulated building setbacks requiring at least a 25-foot setback from the street. Buyers agreed never to sell “vinous\, spirituous\, malt or any other kind of intoxicating liquors on the properties.” Finally\, the deed restrictions protected the homebuilders in this area. From what you may wonder? From complaints or suits about smoke\, heat\, noise\, blast\, concussion\, dust\, glare\, explosion or any impacts from the nearby Homestead Steel Works. The company was obviously determined to go about its business and protect its investment at all cost!

The second of three libraries built here in the Mon Valley\, the Carnegie Library of Homestead was built for use by the common man but adorned with grandeur and opulence fit for a royal family. The Carnegie Library of Homestead is the oldest Carnegie library in continuous operation in its original structure in the US\, and was chosen by CNN in 2014 as one of the 27 most fascinating libraries in the world to visit. Unique to other libraries\, it also is home to a full-service athletic facility and grand concert hall. \nAlso known as the Carnegie of Homestead\, its modern mission is to provide programs and facilities that enhance learning\, wellness and quality of life within and outside the Steel Valley. Today\, we serve over 17\,000 residents of Munhall\, Homestead\, West Homestead\, Whitaker\, and families in nearby communities such as West Mifflin\, Lincoln Place\, Hays\, Greenfield\, Squirrel Hill\, Duquesne and more. The Carnegie of Homestead uplifts and improves the lives of youth\, families and the elderly\, by serving as a community activities center for families and groups throughout the Mon Valley. \nThe Library holds 3\,000\,000 county-wide items in collection including books\, audiobooks\, DVDs\, CDs\, newspapers\, magazines and eResources. There are nearly 7\,000 cardholders (35% of our residents) and on average 733 people visit daily. 30 computers provide over 30\,000 online access sessions annually by the general public\, including disadvantaged individuals who cannot afford home computers and online services. The library holds over 1\,000 learning programs annually in which almost 20\,000 participate of all ages. On any given day\, a variety of activities are happening: toddler and children story time\, arts and crafts; science and art classes for homeschooled children; literacy outreach & book distribution to 30+ local preschools and daycare centers; homework assistance for teens equipped with computers and media; laptops and iPads with college-level computer programming\, and STEAM (Science\, Technology\, Arts\, Math) workshops including robotics in the Makerspace classroom; book clubs for teens through seniors\, knitting classes\, crafting workshops for adults\, and cultural programs such as Japanese or Russian language and psyanky egg decorating! \nThe Athletic Club hosts 1\,100 members who pay affordable fees to attend in Yoga\, Water Aerobics\, Spinning\, Tai Chi\, and Zumba classes in the fitness studios\, enjoy our heated indoor swimming pool\, gymnasium with a walking track\, and train for baseball/softball using our indoor batting cages. 200 youth participate in year-round sports lessons and 230 adults enjoy year-round basketball and volleyball leagues. 150 children and adults learned to swim\, participated in aquatics exercise and scuba instruction classes. 550 seniors are active members of our Silver Sneakers/Silver and Fit exercise classes geared to older adults. \nThe Music Hall seats 1\,045 guests in an intimate atmosphere that has changed very little from the original venue. In 2019\, 50\,000 patrons traveled from Western Pennsylvania and across the country to see nationally known entertainers such as American Idol\, Dave Chappelle\, Pete Davidson\, Boz Scaggs\, Sturgill Simpson\, Jeff Goldblum\, and more. The Music Hall uniquely serves also as a “community house” to local nonprofits offering meeting space for civic engagement\, programs and services such as graduation commencement exercises\, naturalization ceremonies\, school band concerts\, church plays and local dance recitals. Year-round\, the music hall serves as an economic driver for nearby restaurants\, retail establishments and hotels – for every 50 shows held\, the Carnegie brings over $1\,000\,000 in revenue to the Waterfront and Eighth Avenue business districts. In the past several years\, Aaron has earned three medals in the Great American Beer Festival:  in 2018\, the Gold Medal in the Hazy IPA category for “Le Jus;” in 2020\, the Bronze Medal for the Pale Ale category for “Pantsless Pale Ale;” and\, in 2021\, the Bronze Medal in the American Lager category for “Midwest Royalty.” He has dedicated his professional life to beer.  And while he can produce some of the best IPAs and Pale Ales in the country\, over the past several years\, his passion — like ours — has turned towards lagers\, and he is excited to run a brew house that is dedicated to and designed for the same passion. \nGolden Age Beer Co. is located in historic Homestead\, Pennsylvania\, just outside of Pittsburgh. Paul plays an antique Albert System clarinet\, which gives him a wonderfully distinctive sound not often heard on today’s bandstands. In addition to providing vocals\, Paul also splits time on the alto and tenor saxophones. Paul has an extensive repertoire of tunes encompassing the Great American Songbook- written by some of the best-known composers of American popular song. He is also well versed in early New Orleans jazz\, the Swing Era\, big band riffs\, and everything in between. Paul is known globally for his enthusiastic\, energetic\, and powerful performances. \nPaul Cosentino founded the Boilermaker Jazz Band in 1988. Paul has also been featured as a soloist with many of the top bands in the swing world today\, including a special appearance with the Jonathan Stout All-Star Big Band during an Artie Shaw tribute set. Paul has also been featured with Glen Crytzer’s Rhythm Makers\, Michael Gambles Rhythm Serenaders\, the Gordon Webster Band\, Naomi and Her Handsome Devils\, the Russ Wilson Swingtet\, Clint Baker’s Golden Gate Swing Band\, and many more. As a WAP participant you pay a monthly due\, but get priority calendar access\, free space usage\, and keep all the proceeds for the art you make. Gresh’s voice has that same gravelly perfection and his fingers have the same key-tinkley mastery that made Dr. John a national treasure that far exceeded the boundaries of New Orleans. In the past several years\, Aaron has earned three medals in the Great American Beer Festival:  in 2018\, the Gold Medal in the Hazy IPA category for “Le Jus;” in 2020\, the Bronze Medal for the Pale Ale category for “Pantsless Pale Ale;” and\, in 2021\, the Bronze Medal in the American Lager category for “Midwest Royalty.” He has dedicated his professional life to beer.  And while he can produce some of the best IPAs and Pale Ales in the country\, over the past several years\, his passion — like ours — has turned towards lagers\, and he is excited to run a brew house that is dedicated to and designed for the same passion. \nGolden Age Beer Co. is located in historic Homestead\, Pennsylvania\, just outside of Pittsburgh. The second of three libraries built here in the Mon Valley\, the Carnegie Library of Homestead was built for use by the common man but adorned with grandeur and opulence fit for a royal family. The Carnegie Library of Homestead is the oldest Carnegie library in continuous operation in its original structure in the US\, and was chosen by CNN in 2014 as one of the 27 most fascinating libraries in the world to visit. Unique to other libraries\, it also is home to a full-service athletic facility and grand concert hall. \nAlso known as the Carnegie of Homestead\, its modern mission is to provide programs and facilities that enhance learning\, wellness and quality of life within and outside the Steel Valley. Today\, we serve over 17\,000 residents of Munhall\, Homestead\, West Homestead\, Whitaker\, and families in nearby communities such as West Mifflin\, Lincoln Place\, Hays\, Greenfield\, Squirrel Hill\, Duquesne and more. The Carnegie of Homestead uplifts and improves the lives of youth\, families and the elderly\, by serving as a community activities center for families and groups throughout the Mon Valley. \nThe Library holds 3\,000\,000 county-wide items in collection including books\, audiobooks\, DVDs\, CDs\, newspapers\, magazines and eResources. There are nearly 7\,000 cardholders (35% of our residents) and on average 733 people visit daily. 30 computers provide over 30\,000 online access sessions annually by the general public\, including disadvantaged individuals who cannot afford home computers and online services. The library holds over 1\,000 learning programs annually in which almost 20\,000 participate of all ages. On any given day\, a variety of activities are happening: toddler and children story time\, arts and crafts; science and art classes for homeschooled children; literacy outreach & book distribution to 30+ local preschools and daycare centers; homework assistance for teens equipped with computers and media; laptops and iPads with college-level computer programming\, and STEAM (Science\, Technology\, Arts\, Math) workshops including robotics in the Makerspace classroom; book clubs for teens through seniors\, knitting classes\, crafting workshops for adults\, and cultural programs such as Japanese or Russian language and psyanky egg decorating! \nThe Athletic Club hosts 1\,100 members who pay affordable fees to attend in Yoga\, Water Aerobics\, Spinning\, Tai Chi\, and Zumba classes in the fitness studios\, enjoy our heated indoor swimming pool\, gymnasium with a walking track\, and train for baseball/softball using our indoor batting cages. 200 youth participate in year-round sports lessons and 230 adults enjoy year-round basketball and volleyball leagues. 150 children and adults learned to swim\, participated in aquatics exercise and scuba instruction classes. 550 seniors are active members of our Silver Sneakers/Silver and Fit exercise classes geared to older adults. \nThe Music Hall seats 1\,045 guests in an intimate atmosphere that has changed very little from the original venue. In 2019\, 50\,000 patrons traveled from Western Pennsylvania and across the country to see nationally known entertainers such as American Idol\, Dave Chappelle\, Pete Davidson\, Boz Scaggs\, Sturgill Simpson\, Jeff Goldblum\, and more. The Music Hall uniquely serves also as a “community house” to local nonprofits offering meeting space for civic engagement\, programs and services such as graduation commencement exercises\, naturalization ceremonies\, school band concerts\, church plays and local dance recitals. Year-round\, the music hall serves as an economic driver for nearby restaurants\, retail establishments and hotels – for every 50 shows held\, the Carnegie brings over $1\,000\,000 in revenue to the Waterfront and Eighth Avenue business districts. All that time\, we have asked\, what do these toys do when we’re not playing with them? \n“How to Spot Counterfeit Beanie Babies” is a grey market VHS tape released in 1998. The tape itself is auxiliary to a speculative market surrounding Ty’s line of Beanie Baby stuffed animals which\, for a few short years\, would demand price points in the thousands before abruptly cratering in value at the close of the 20th century. The tape was not produced by the Ty corporation\, though it was permitted to use the company’s branding off the books\, as the point of the tape was to signify the value of the company to the niche set of whale investors who propped up the Beanie bubble in question. \nThe Beanie bubble is cited as an especially frivolous instance of speculative investment\, though\, it is only absurd because it is recent history. If we squint\, we can see an identical frenzy in the half of American men who regularly bet on sports\, or our video game industry’s roots in gambling markets\, or the Catholic clerics who were subject to excommunication due to their affinity for deriving divination from the roll of the dice. What is it about this notion of play that is so attractive to addictive personalities? \n“Furpile” is a please-touch plushie sculpture show showing in various venues throughout Pittsburgh this summer. 70+ artists were invited to produce a unique stuffy that audiences are encouraged to see\, touch\, squeeze\, sniff\, and play with. \nThis screening will use the VHS tape “How to Spot Counterfeit Beanie Babies” as a framework for exploring the hidden histories of fabrics. The 1998 video will be augmented with relevant shorts to expand the conversation surrounding the Beanie Baby beyond the realm of the market and into a more holistic\, plushie-pessimist view of our economy of play. \nWhose invites you to bring your own beloved plushie friends to this screening\, so they may be empowered to pursue their own un-bodily autonomy. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRent the Space\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe theater is available for rent for shows\, performances or rehearsals. This programs is specifically designed to reduce the cost of access to theater resources\, rehearsal space and other things that make performance hard to do. As a WAP participant you pay a monthly due\, but get priority calendar access\, free space usage\, and keep all the proceeds for the art you make. The WAP program is about flipping the non-profit artist funding model\, leaning into community as the center of supporting performers\, and collectively holding and using the resources to make work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVolunteer or Perform with the GBX!\n\n\n\n\nDear fellow lover of theatre and performance!\nAre you and actor\, director\, tech person or simply have an interest in getting involved and supporting local DIY art making?
