SUMMARY:Furry Neighborhood Variety Show at the Glitterbox Theater | July 6
DESCRIPTION:Furry Neighborhood Variety Show at the Glitterbox Theater | July 6\n Furry sort of show at The Glitterbox Theater! This showcase is intended to bring together a cast of characters to perform for the local and visiting audiences at The Glitterbox Theater closer to the end of Anthrocon (Sunday at 2 PM and Monday at 7 PM). The two days of performances could be different in lineup depending on availability. \nSunday July 5th at 2pm AND Monday July 6th at 7pm \nThe Glitterbox Theater – 210 W 8th Avenue\, Homestead\, PA 15210 \nActs Paid from Tickette Sales \nSubmit your performance! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfQ_RqEpFvuP5FwZtG7LDsBhxH0AB7X3XQ-Dps2f7u2dNiaVw/viewform — Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis\, and effort will be put into configuring the show(s) in a way that many people can perform. Acts will be arranged in a way that promotes smooth transitions from act to act\, which could involve collaboration between artists. \nAbout the hosts: \nLibbyPuppy (They/Them) is a very good girl and co-host for this variety. They like doggy paddling around the pool\, reading comics in the grass\, and going out on w-a-l-k-s to sniff out ALL of the Free Library Boxes. \nKramer Dog (He/Him) is a decent enough dog and co-host for this variety. He likes roaming off the leash\, eating delicious food off of tables\, and watching squirrels cautiously from a second-story window. \nRegarding The Glitterbox – \nThis space is built on community and DIY\, two values which are also held closely by the furry community at large. Given this\, Gbox is and has been one of the local venues most primed to welcome furries. This space is fun to be in\, perform in\, and this performance will be a demonstration of this. \nA link to the website for accessibility information: https://www.theglitterboxtheater.com/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRent the Space\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe theater is available for rent for shows\, performances or rehearsals. SUMMARY:How to Spot Counterfeit Beanie Babies (the "Furpile" video compendium) at the Glitterbox Theater | June 20
DESCRIPTION:How to Spot Counterfeit Beanie Babies (the “Furpile” video compendium) at the Glitterbox Theater\n \nThis screening will include work by Jackie Blue\, Lucie Cartwright\, Jennifer Marie Cella\, Cecelia Condit\, flavushh\, Jodie Mack\, Eleanor McQueeney\, Bea Orlandi\, Tex Saber\, and Mark Zubrovich (among others). \nMore information about the show\, including other ways to view these sculptors\, is available here: \nhttps://whose.neocities.org \nWe have used toys the same way for the length of human history. All that time\, we have asked\, what do these toys do when we’re not playing with them? \n“How to Spot Counterfeit Beanie Babies” is a grey market VHS tape released in 1998. The tape itself is auxiliary to a speculative market surrounding Ty’s line of Beanie Baby stuffed animals which\, for a few short years\, would demand price points in the thousands before abruptly cratering in value at the close of the 20th century. The tape was not produced by the Ty corporation\, though it was permitted to use the company’s branding off the books\, as the point of the tape was to signify the value of the company to the niche set of whale investors who propped up the Beanie bubble in question. \nThe Beanie bubble is cited as an especially frivolous instance of speculative investment\, though\, it is only absurd because it is recent history. If we squint\, we can see an identical frenzy in the half of American men who regularly bet on sports\, or our video game industry’s roots in gambling markets\, or the Catholic clerics who were subject to excommunication due to their affinity for deriving divination from the roll of the dice. What is it about this notion of play that is so attractive to addictive personalities? \n“Furpile” is a please-touch plushie sculpture show showing in various venues throughout Pittsburgh this summer. 70+ artists were invited to produce a unique stuffy that audiences are encouraged to see\, touch\, squeeze\, sniff\, and play with. \nThis screening will use the VHS tape “How to Spot Counterfeit Beanie Babies” as a framework for exploring the hidden histories of fabrics. The 1998 video will be augmented with relevant shorts to expand the conversation surrounding the Beanie Baby beyond the realm of the market and into a more holistic\, plushie-pessimist view of our economy of play. \nWhose invites you to bring your own beloved plushie friends to this screening\, so they may be empowered to pursue their own un-bodily autonomy. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRent the Space\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe theater is available for rent for shows\, performances or rehearsals. SUMMARY:Paintable Pittsburgh: The Art of Henry Koerner at the Bost Building in Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Paintable Pittsburgh: The Art of Henry Koerner at the Bost Building in Homestead\n\nJoin us for the opening reception of Paintable Pittsburgh: The Art of Henry Koerner at the Bost Building in Homestead.\n\n\n Friday\, April 24\n 6–8 PM\n Bost Building\, 623 E 8th Ave\, Homestead\n Free & open to the public\n\n\nThis retrospective honors Henry Koerner (1915–1995)—a Vienna-born Jewish artist\, WWII veteran\, and longtime Pittsburgh resident whose work captured the city’s neighborhoods\, architecture\, and people with remarkable warmth and intimacy. From painting 46 Time magazine covers from life to later watercolors and oils of Pittsburgh streetscapes\, Koerner made this city his lifelong subject.\n\n\nCome celebrate the opening\, meet fellow art and history lovers\, and experience a Pittsburgh story told through paint.\n\n\nOn view April 24–July 31\, 2026.\n\n\nabout RIVERS OF STEEL\n\nRivers of Steel showcases the artistry and innovation of southwestern Pennsylvania’s industrial and cultural heritage through its historical and 21st-century attractions—offering unique experiences via tours\, workshops\, exhibitions\, festivals\, and more. \nBehind the scenes\, Rivers of Steel supports economic revitalization—working at the grassroots level to deepen community partnerships\, promote heritage tourism\, and preserve local recreational and cultural resources for future generations. \n\nOur Mission\n\n\n\nFounded on the principles of heritage development\, community partnership\, and a reverence for the region’s natural and shared resources\, Rivers of Steel strengthens the economic and cultural fabric of western Pennsylvania by fostering dynamic initiatives and transformative experiences. \nOur Story: A vision for the future\, built on the past\n\n\nRivers of Steel’s journey began in the aftermath of the collapsed steel industry. In 1988\, a group of citizens got together\, united by their concerns that with destruction of the shuttered mills an important part of our region’s culture was in danger of being erased\, too. \nThe prevailing sentiment at the time was not one of reverence for the industry; rather\, it was a stew of mixed emotions—anger for the way things went down\, loss of identity in the face of joblessness\, and fear of an uncertain future. The emotional landscape was too raw for most folks to want to celebrate what the steel industry once was\, especially when it was painfully obvious that this ‘industrial downturn’ reflected permanent change. \nLong story short: those citizens organized as a task force. Four years later\, the nonprofit organization that was to become Rivers of Steel was established to carry the torch of Big Steel and its related industries—not simply telling the companies’ stories and the products they made\, but the stories of the men and women who worked there. \nIt is a legacy was too important not to save. Relics and remnants were captured\, so were oral histories. The scope of which grew beyond the workers themselves\, encompassing the neighborhoods they represented—their languages\, their churches\, their traditions and recipes—and sowed the seeds of what was to become Rivers of Steel’s archival\, cultural conservation and exhibition programs. \n\n\nRivers of Steel: A nonprofit\, but also a place\nCreated by Congress in 1996\, the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area celebrates the region’s industrial history\, the landscape that fueled it\, and the hardworking men and women who made it possible\, linking its communities through their shared cultural and industrial heritage.

SUMMARY:Essential Pittsburgh: J.T. Vale at The Glitterbox Theater
DESCRIPTION:Essential Pittsburgh: J.T. Vale\n\nPittsburgh Sound + Image presents a filmmaker unseen for 40+ years \nJ.T. Vale (James Thomas or\, to his friends and family\, Jim) was a lifelong artist\, obsessive cinephile\, and a fixture of Pittsburgh’s South Side. He started making films as a kid. In his 20s\, he found community in the emerging punk and experimental scenes thriving around Pittsburgh Filmmakers\, then located at 205 Oakland Ave (now an Amazon store.) There\, his idiosyncratic interests crystallized into a distinctive style of constant but subtle\, fluid camera movement\, which J.T. theorized as locking onto the wavelength of the subject being filmed. He was a filmmaker chasing the sublime\, and in works such as “Cindy Vale\,” he achieves it. \nIn between his personal output\, Vale was one of the more in-demand camerapeople in the city. Peggy Ahwesh\, Tippi Comden\, Robert Haller\, and Natalka Voslakov (who wrote that he “knows more about film-making than most of the U.S.A.!”) were just a few of his recurring collaborators. A true maven of cinema povera\, he had an eye for cataloging and dramatizing the oddball characters in his social orbit. And Pittsburgh. His films are so very Pittsburgh\, down to a few square blocks of the South Side. Yet Jim has received little attention in the past 40 years. He passed away in 2010\, and the majority of his prolific filmography is currently lost. Over the last seven years\, we have scavenged Pittsburgh and beyond for any traces of his work\, and we’re honored to be able to assemble a J.T. Vale primer on which we think he would approve having his name. \nDoors at 7:30\, show starts at 8 \nAdvance tickets available here. \nABOUT ESSENTIAL PITTSBURGH \nPittsburgh Sound + Image seeks to redefine our region’s film history with the Essential Pittsburgh series. We acknowledge the depth of creativity which has flourished here by spotlighting vital artists and their films from the 1960s through the 2000s. This landmark series is a continuation of our efforts to celebrate a fuller picture of independent\, amateur\, industrial\, and experimental filmmaking talent\, and to better situate Pittsburgh nationally as a place of rich cinematic history.
