SUMMARY:10 Things to Actually Do in Steel Valley This Summer!
DESCRIPTION:10 Things to Actually Do in Steel Valley This Summer!\n \nSummer is one of the best times to explore everything the Steel Valley has to offer. Whether you’re a longtime resident\, a newcomer to the area\, or someone looking for things to do near Pittsburgh\, Homestead\, Munhall\, and West Homestead are filled with unique experiences\, local events\, outdoor recreation\, arts\, entertainment\, and community celebrations. \nTo help you plan your summer\, we’ve put together ten great ways to experience the Steel Valley. \n1. Walk\, Run or Bike the GAP Trail\n \nThe Great Allegheny Passage (GAP Trail) is one of the region’s greatest outdoor assets. Stretching from Pittsburgh to Cumberland\, Maryland\, the trail passes directly through the Steel Valley and offers beautiful river views\, historic landmarks\, and easy access to local businesses\, restaurants\, and attractions. \nWhether you’re walking\, jogging\, biking\, or simply enjoying the scenery\, the GAP Trail is a perfect way to experience the community. \n2. Explore & Experience History\n \nFew communities can tell the story of American industry like the Steel Valley. \nVisit Rivers of Steel destinations including the historic Pump House and Carrie Blast Furnaces. Take a guided tour\, attend a workshop\, explore industrial art experiences\, or learn how steelmaking helped shape not only our region but the nation itself. \nThese sites continue to attract visitors from around the world while preserving the area’s remarkable history. \n3. Celebrate 125 Years of Munhall & West Homestead Boroughs\n \nBoth Munhall and West Homestead are celebrating their 125th anniversaries in 2026. \nThroughout the summer\, residents and visitors can participate in special events\, celebrations\, historical programs\, and community gatherings honoring the people\, neighborhoods\, and businesses that helped build these communities. \nMunhall celebrates on June 13\, while West Homestead’s anniversary festivities take place August 13–15. \n4. Catch a Show on a Local Stage\n \nThe Steel Valley has become home to an impressive collection of entertainment venues and performance spaces. \nCatch local performers at The Glitterbox Theater and Forge Urban Winery\, or enjoy legendary bands\, musicians\, and entertainers at the historic Carnegie Library of Homestead Music Hall or nationally touring comedians and acts at the Pittsburgh Improv! \nNo matter your interests\, there is likely a show happening nearby. \n5. Discover Local Murals & Public Art\n \nThe Steel Valley has quietly become one of the most colorful outdoor galleries in the region. \nMurals\, public art installations\, painted walls\, and creative placemaking projects can be found throughout Homestead\, Munhall\, and West Homestead. Spend an afternoon exploring the neighborhoods and see how artists are helping tell the story of the community through public art. \n6. Spend a Night at Market Nights\n \nMunhall Market Nights have quickly become one of the area’s favorite summer traditions. \nFeaturing food trucks\, local vendors\, live entertainment\, community organizations\, and family activities\, these gatherings bring hundreds of people together throughout the summer. \nUpcoming dates include June 26\, July 24\, and August 28. \n7. Experience Arts & Education\n \nSummer is a great time to learn something new. \nTake a class\, attend a workshop\, visit a library program\, participate in a community event\, or experience educational programming offered by organizations such as the Carnegie Library of Homestead\, Best of the Batch Foundation\, Dragon’s Den\, Eberle Studios\, B is for Books\, and many others throughout the Steel Valley. \n8. Celebrate with Community\n \nCommunity events remain at the heart of the Steel Valley experience. \nFrom the Knights Barbershop Block Party and Homestead Community Day to neighborhood fundraisers\, concerts\, races\, festivals\, and community celebrations\, summer is when residents come together to celebrate what makes these communities special. \n9. Explore Our Parks & Green Spaces\n \nThe Steel Valley offers more green space than many people realize. \nNeighborhood parks\, playgrounds\, athletic fields\, walking paths\, and riverfront areas provide opportunities to relax\, exercise\, and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re spending time with family\, walking the dog\, or attending a community event\, local parks remain an important part of summer life. \n10. Your Summer Starts Here\n \nOf course\, these ten ideas are only the beginning. \nSteelValleyEvents.com was created to help residents and visitors discover everything happening throughout Homestead\, Munhall\, and West Homestead. From events and festivals to restaurants\, shops\, attractions\, business spotlights\, and interactive maps\, the site serves as a local guide to exploring the Steel Valley. \nWhether you’re looking for something to do this weekend\, planning a visit\, supporting local businesses\, or discovering a new favorite destination\, SteelValleyEvents.com is your starting point. \nGet out\, explore\, support local\, and enjoy summer in the Steel Valley!

SUMMARY:Saturday Soul Sessions: DJ Mike Canton at Golden Age Beer Co. | June 20
DESCRIPTION:Saturday Soul Sessions: DJ Mike Canton at Golden Age Beer Co. | June 20\n\n12:00 PM  4:00 PM\n\n\n\n\nGolden Age Beer Company337 East 8th AvenueHomestead\, PA\, 15120United States (map)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday Soul Sessions returns with our good friend Mike Canton (a/k/a “Soul Show Mike”) from Pittsburgh’s famed “The Soul Show” (weekly\, every Saturday on WZUM Pittsburgh). We’re honored every time Mike drops in to play some deep cuts from his infinite database of funk\, soul\, and groove tracks. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe love lager.\n\n\n\n\nWe started Golden Age Beer Co. because we are passionate about making clean and crisp lagers that are eminently drinkable. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom crisp Northern German and fragrant Italian-style pilsners to luxurious dunkels and Franconian rauchbiers to the easy-drinking\, “lawnmower” American lager\, we believe that\, with their clean\, subtle and eminently-drinkable finesse\, lagers are the beers that bring people together\, that cross divides\, and that are both the past and the future of beer.  And so we brought a brewery that makes lager its primary focus to Pittsburgh and\, more particularly\, to Homestead.  Indeed\, we believe that to do anything else would be an injustice to this community’s hard-working\, steely heritage and resolve.  When this community rose up in 1892 to rebuff a barge full of armed Pinkertons\, it was fueled by Homestead-brewed lager\, while the very brewers who crafted that lager stood in solidarity with their steel-worker brethren on the banks of the Monongahela.  We hope that we can stand in solidarity with this community once more as it continues on its path to a new golden age. \nOur brewhouse is well-equipped to produce the finest lagers.  We are fortunate to brew on a state-of-the-art 15 barrel BrauKon brewing system.  Bavarian-made and designed to manufacture the world’s most precise beer styles\, this system provides our brewing team with the tools it needs to walk the tightrope to make perfect lager\, which is defined nearly as much by its absence of imperfections as it is by its pursuit of perfection.  In what feels like a meeting driven by fate itself\, we were fortunate to find a head brewer who is up to the challenge of working with a system that has a lofty reputation for precision and finesse. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet Head Brewer Aaron Dahl\nHead Brewer Aaron Dahl joined Golden Age in 2021 to oversee the transition of the brew house and begin working on recipe development.  Aaron comes from Chicago’s Alarmist Brewing\, where he was the head brewer for six years prior to moving to Pittsburgh to head the Golden Age Beer team. In the past several years\, Aaron has earned three medals in the Great American Beer Festival:  in 2018\, the Gold Medal in the Hazy IPA category for “Le Jus;” in 2020\, the Bronze Medal for the Pale Ale category for “Pantsless Pale Ale;” and\, in 2021\, the Bronze Medal in the American Lager category for “Midwest Royalty.” He has dedicated his professional life to beer.  And while he can produce some of the best IPAs and Pale Ales in the country\, over the past several years\, his passion — like ours — has turned towards lagers\, and he is excited to run a brew house that is dedicated to and designed for the same passion. \nGolden Age Beer Co. is located in historic Homestead\, Pennsylvania\, just outside of Pittsburgh. Founded by the same people behind Pittsburgh’s beer bars the Independent Brewing Company and Lorelei\, Golden Age is dedicated to providing its community with an inclusive\, accepting\, safe and hospitable environment that focuses on people as much as it does great beer. \nWe are an equal opportunity employer that guarantees a living wage to everyone who works here. We welcome dogs and children.

SUMMARY:How to Spot Counterfeit Beanie Babies (the "Furpile" video compendium) at the Glitterbox Theater | June 20
DESCRIPTION:How to Spot Counterfeit Beanie Babies (the “Furpile” video compendium) at the Glitterbox Theater\n \nThis screening will include work by Jackie Blue\, Lucie Cartwright\, Jennifer Marie Cella\, Cecelia Condit\, flavushh\, Jodie Mack\, Eleanor McQueeney\, Bea Orlandi\, Tex Saber\, and Mark Zubrovich (among others). \nMore information about the show\, including other ways to view these sculptors\, is available here: \nhttps://whose.neocities.org \nWe have used toys the same way for the length of human history. All that time\, we have asked\, what do these toys do when we’re not playing with them? \n“How to Spot Counterfeit Beanie Babies” is a grey market VHS tape released in 1998. The tape itself is auxiliary to a speculative market surrounding Ty’s line of Beanie Baby stuffed animals which\, for a few short years\, would demand price points in the thousands before abruptly cratering in value at the close of the 20th century. The tape was not produced by the Ty corporation\, though it was permitted to use the company’s branding off the books\, as the point of the tape was to signify the value of the company to the niche set of whale investors who propped up the Beanie bubble in question. \nThe Beanie bubble is cited as an especially frivolous instance of speculative investment\, though\, it is only absurd because it is recent history. If we squint\, we can see an identical frenzy in the half of American men who regularly bet on sports\, or our video game industry’s roots in gambling markets\, or the Catholic clerics who were subject to excommunication due to their affinity for deriving divination from the roll of the dice. What is it about this notion of play that is so attractive to addictive personalities? \n“Furpile” is a please-touch plushie sculpture show showing in various venues throughout Pittsburgh this summer. 70+ artists were invited to produce a unique stuffy that audiences are encouraged to see\, touch\, squeeze\, sniff\, and play with. \nThis screening will use the VHS tape “How to Spot Counterfeit Beanie Babies” as a framework for exploring the hidden histories of fabrics. The 1998 video will be augmented with relevant shorts to expand the conversation surrounding the Beanie Baby beyond the realm of the market and into a more holistic\, plushie-pessimist view of our economy of play. \nWhose invites you to bring your own beloved plushie friends to this screening\, so they may be empowered to pursue their own un-bodily autonomy. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRent the Space\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe theater is available for rent for shows\, performances or rehearsals. Check out the venue info page if you have questions about size\, capacity\, layout or technical details of the space. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGlitterbox Working Artist Program\n\n\n\n\nThe Glitterbox family is pleased to announce the launch of our Working Artist Program. This programs is specifically designed to reduce the cost of access to theater resources\, rehearsal space and other things that make performance hard to do. As a WAP participant you pay a monthly due\, but get priority calendar access\, free space usage\, and keep all the proceeds for the art you make. The WAP program is about flipping the non-profit artist funding model\, leaning into community as the center of supporting performers\, and collectively holding and using the resources to make work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVolunteer or Perform with the GBX!\n\n\n\n\nDear fellow lover of theatre and performance!\nAre you and actor\, director\, tech person or simply have an interest in getting involved and supporting local DIY art making? We keep a running list of folks that might want to help out or be involved in a production or show. Let us know what you are interested in! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDonate\n\n\n\n\nThe Glitterbox Theater is run by an all volunteer collective made up of artists and supporters. We strive to keep the venue as inexpensive as possible\, while still providing the resources for folks to put on amazing work. We believe we occupy a very unique place in the Pittsburgh theater and performance community. Please consider supporting us through a single or recurring donation.

SUMMARY:Live Jazz with David Throckmorton at Golden Age Beer Co. | Weekly Saturdays
DESCRIPTION:Live Jazz with David Throckmorton at Golden Age Beer Co. | Weekly Saturdays\n\n7:00 PM  10:00 PM\n\n\nGolden Age Beer Company337 East 8th AvenueHomestead\, PA\, 15120United States (map)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin jazz drummer David Throckmorton for a swinging weekend set. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe love lager.\n\n\n\n\nWe started Golden Age Beer Co. because we are passionate about making clean and crisp lagers that are eminently drinkable.
